A fatal train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the rapidity and management of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.
The accident occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link built to connect the Atlantic and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to establish an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.
“We shall thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this incident,” affirmed the head of state.
The official announced that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The official added plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those impacted.
Key Undertaking of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the former leader, whose presidency concluded the previous year. This venture was intimately linked to his government's developmental goals for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to kickstart the economy of a comparatively less developed part of the country.
Building Management and Safety Concerns
The development of both rail lines was supervised by the nation's military, marking a significant increase of its duties in civilian projects. They were completed at an fast-tracked speed, surpassing forecasts to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that government.
However, this rushed timetable had also raised significant concerns over construction quality.
- Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This encompasses an earlier crash this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced several non-lethal derailments.
Appeals for Audit and Pause
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the leader of a major opposition party urged an urgent pause in the building and running of all comparable projects.
This pause was suggested until the completion of a full technical review. The party stated that the tragedy "calls for swift accountability."
In reaction, the head of state maintained that the train had been functioning in full adherence to all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the development and running of these national initiatives.
