Fresh analysis indicates that patients who come off new slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover reduced body mass far faster than those who halt conventional diet and exercise regimens.
Research printed in a major health publication points out that while obese individuals can lose about a fifth of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"Users using these medications should be cognizant of the risk of rapid weight regain when the medication ends," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery suggests a reversion to original weight in about a year and a half.
Analyzing Treatments
The analysis, which examined 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, contrasted the effects of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.
Scientists point out that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone generally see a slower creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Rapid Rebound
Experts believe the mechanism of the jabs explains the amplified regain.
These medications imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate hunger.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels far above than normal might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also lessen responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Stopping of this hormone supplement results in hunger is uncontrolled, making overeating a significant risk."
A Chronic Condition?
Health authorities advise the jabs for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts say that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment is often life-long.
This perspective is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "highlight the long-term character of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
Patient Experiences
Individuals who have come off the jabs explain a powerful return of cravings.
"It was like something activating and I was suddenly starving," said an individual.
The struggle is exacerbated if individuals have not developed permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.
Significant Use
Figures indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with demand continuing to grow.
- Adoption is greater among women compared to males.
- The middle-aged age group shows the greatest usage rates.
- A large proportion obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
In conclusion, experts caution that while the jabs are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent fix and maintained weight loss relies on ongoing behavioural support.
